Ductus arteriosus

The ductus arteriosus, also called the ductus Botalli, named after the Italian physiologist Leonardo Botallo, is a blood vessel in the developing fetus connecting the trunk of the pulmonary artery to the proximal descending aorta. It allows most of the blood from the right ventricle to bypass the fetus's fluid-filled non-functioning lungs. Upon closure at birth, it becomes the ligamentum arteriosum.

Examples of use of ductus arteriosus
1. Several weeks later, the operation intended to tie the ductus arteriosus was conducted based on the recommendation of the neonatal ward head and a pediatric cardiologist from Schneider Children‘s Medical Center in Petah Tikva, who examined the infant at Barzilai.
2. The ministry is probing suspicions that during an operation to tie the ductus arteriosus, which serves as a central blood vessel to the fetus in utero and usually closes by itself after birth, the left pulmonary artery was mistakenly tied instead.
3. The same day I received a response from the Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills, N.J., offering to perform the surgery free for the family through a program called ‘Children of the World Program.’» The Deborah Heart and Lung Center reviewed Karishma’s charts and made a final diagnosis that she had Patent Ductus Arteriosus, where a part of her aorta did not close and develop after birth.
